A community garden is to be created in Dagenham.
The green space will be shaped on the site of a disused garage and a ten-year lease for the location has been secured from the Becontree Ward Central Tenants and Residents Association.
Anyone looking for flats to rent in Barking could be buoyed by the development as it will encourage residents to come together.
Darren Henaghan, corporate director of housing and environment at Barking & Dagenham Council, said: "What is good about this project is that the community has been involved every step of the way. It will be great to see how the garden develops over time."
He added every single person who lives in the borough is welcome to take part in the initiative and he hopes it will bring the area closer together.
Residents will have a final say on what the garden is to look like and what facilities it will have.
