Helping first-time buyers to get on the ladder

The event, now in its third year, takes place on Saturday, October 19 at the Grand Connaught Rooms, Covent Garden.

It has helped hundreds of homebuyers to find their way through the maze with seminars, including the practicalities of buying a property and shared ownership explained.

"Now is a very exciting time for first-time buyers in London and the South East to get on the property ladder," says Lynda Clark, editor of First Time Buyer magazine.

"As the market in and around the capital once again picks up pace, more aspiring homebuyers will be looking to benefit from the potential capital gains currently being enjoyed.

"As well as having conveyancing experts available to talk to on the day, we will also be offering first-time buyers who attend the show free financial advice. This will allow them to find out what they can afford, giving them a better idea of the home they can expect to be able to buy."

The average deposit on a home in the capital now costs Ј64,000, according to the Council of Mortgage Lenders.

Barratt Homes, the main sponsors, will be exhibiting all of their developments available in and around London.

The new Help to Buy scheme, which only requires a five per cent deposit, will be available on all new properties up to the value of Ј600,000.

Gary Ennis, southern regional managing director for Barratt Developments, says: "We are committed to helping first-time buyers understand the different ways that they can get on the housing ladder in the most expensive part of the country.

"While we are seeing more first-time buyers coming forwards with larger deposits saved, we are also seeing schemes like Help to Buy proving to be very popular.

"Due to its five per cent deposit requirement and five-year, interest-free loan, many are taking advantage of it now.

"We will be on hand at the show to explain how it works and demonstrate where and what they can afford to buy." express
